Hockey / Ice Skating
St. Ignace is home to hockey fans of all ages. We have our local ice arena, Little Bear East, for skaters of all ages. We also get to enjoy the wild ice of Lake Huron right in the downtown, off-shore in Moran Bay overlooking Mackinac Island. The arena hosts hockey and ice skating events from October through March every year. They offer skate rental and sharpening at the facility. Our community supports the St. Ignace Youth Hockey Association so they can offer hockey from kindergarten through high school seniors, to girls and boys.
Every February, St. Ignace hosts the annual U.P. Pond Hockey Championships. We have one weekend for adults only and the next for youth only. Pond hockey is played on wild ice outdoors with no goalies and four-on-four play action. The puck must be kept on the ice as the goal is a 6 inch high platform on both ends of the 75' by 150' rinks. Over 100 teams participate at every age, gender and skill level. The rinks on Lake Huron are zamboni-maintained in tip-top condition.
Your visit to St. Ignace may include an exhibition game by the Detroit Red Wings Alumni who have played at the Little Bear and look forward to their return. Or perhaps you enjoy watching the young ladies from our local figure skating classes in their performances and shows. See our winter calendar and make your plans for a great getaway!
